MorethanhalfoftheSilverlynnApartmentsbuildingwas reduced to rubbleand39 residentswere displacedafter a raging fire torethroughthe Lynn Valleyseniors residenceon Saturday.
District of North VancouverFire andRescue Services first received reportsofafire at1335 27th St.justafter 9a.m.Saturdaymorning,asthick smokecould be seen risingoverthesitefromacrossGreater Vancouver.
Morethan60crewmembersfromacrossallthree NorthShorefiredepartmentsarrivedtobattlethe blaze, whichstemmedfrompartofthebuildingthathad been under renovationandwasunoccupied.Firespreadrapidlythroughthatsectionbecauseitwasallframingand nodrywall,saidDNVFRS Fire Chief MikeDanks.
While that part wasunoccupied, more than 10 residentshadtobeevacuatedofftheirbalconiesin the adjacentoccupiedsectionofthebuilding.
All residentswereaccountedfor,Dankssaid,adding thattwowere senttohospitalinstablecondition but soon released,andanotherthreepeople were treatedby paramedicsonsite,likelyforsmoke inhalation.
SaraLawson, wholivesablockawayfrom Silverlynn, first noticedthefirewhileshewas returningfromher daughter’ssoftballgameataround 9:30a.m.

Curbside recyclingin West Vancouver isabouttogetalotcuter.
OnMonday,May5,householdsacross themunicipalitybegan receivinglittlepink boxes,whichwillsoonholdflexibleplastics forcurbsidepickup.
InsideeachBarbie-worthybinisabrochurefromRecycleBCto ready residents forthestartofstaggeredmonthlycollection datesinJune.
Since2019,RecycleBC depotsprovincewidehavebeencollectingflexible,or“soft,” plasticslikeZiplocbags;crinklybagsfor cereal,chipsorinstantnoodles;“net”plastic bagsforvariousfruits andvegetables; and non-food protectivepackagingmaterialslike bubblewrap.In recentyears,moreitems havebeenaddedtothecategoryincluding plasticbagsandpolyethylenefoam.
Despite residentsacrosstheprovince beingableto recycletheseitemsbytravellingtotheirlocaldepot, West Vancouver is oneoftheonlymunicipalitiesto rollout curbsidepickup.
Thepermanentserviceiscomingto West Vanafterasuccessfulpilotprogramin certainneighbourhoodsbetween2021 and 2022,saidMajaRusinowska, spokesperson forRecycleBC.
“Thecommunitydidn’thaveadepot fordropoff,thenweranapilottoseeif [curbsidepickup]wouldwork,”shesaid. “The resultscameoutfavourable,andso nowwe’regoingforwardwithapermanent service.”

“Therewasgreatparticipation from residents,”Rusinowskasaid.“Resultscame backthatitwasconvenient,itwaseasy,and alotofmaterialwascollected.”
Rusinowskahappenstolivein West Van, inoneofthemulti-familybuildingsthat’s beenusingthenewbins.Otherthanthenew
receptaclesstandingoutfromexistingones, shesaidshe’snotsurewhythey’repinkin colour–butshe’snotupsetaboutit.
“Personally,Ilovepink,soIwasvery gladwhenthatcolourwaschosen,”she said.
Whilethecutecontainersare exclusive to West Vanforthemoment,there’spotentialforthemtocometoothercommunities.
“Wearelookingintothepotentialfor expandinginother regionsacrosstheprovincethatmay requirethis curbsideservice,” Rusinowskasaid.“Butthiswouldbeon a case-by-casebasis,anditwouldbeupto localgovernmentswhetherornotthey’re interestedinexploringthis curbsideoption andthenconnecting withus.”
Inthemeantime,thedistrictsaidit’s pleasedtohave flexibleplastic collectionat thecurbside.
“Thisnewserviceprovides West Vancouver residentswith a moreconvenient waytosortanddivert theirwaste at home,” saidEmily Willobee,seniormanagerof engineering.“Curbside collectionwillmake iteasierto recycle flexibleplastics,helping ustakeanothermeaningfulsteptoward the district’s waste reduction goals.”

Herearethestepstofollowforcurbside flexibleplasticpickup,perRecycleBC: 1.Emptyandrinse.
2. Contain.Bundleyour flexibleplastics inside reusedplasticbagsorzipper-lock pouches(likebreadorproducebags) beforeplacingtheminthepink boxto keepthemfromblowing away.
3. Set out.Placethebundledplasticsinyour pinkboxandleaveit at curbsidebetween 5and7:30a.m.ondesignatedmonthly collectiondays.Flexibleplasticswillbe collectedonaseparatetruck,so collectionmaybeatadifferenttimeofday. Therearenochangesto collectionof other recycledmaterials,RecycleBCsaid.

gully.Theotherpersonhadleft thetrailtotrytolocatetheir friendandcalled911.
Thesearch went intotheearly hoursonMonday,May5.
LionsBaySearchandRescue was theleadonthe search,with NSRprovidingmedicalandair support.NorthShoreRescue respondedwith Talon Helicopters andwasabletolocateoneof thehikersinsteepterrainand hoistedhimout.
“Groundteamswere inserted intotheareaand an airsearch was conductedforthesecond hiker,”saidBarnett.“Theground search required hundredsoffeet of ropeandhighlyskilled rescuersintechnicalterrain.”
Thesecondhiker,whofell, was locatedunresponsive.An NSRdoctorwasimmediately hoistedintothelocationand first aid was provided.
“Asitwas nowpastsunsetthe
helicoptercrewswitchedtonight flying protocolswithNVGs(night visiongoggles).Thehikerwas hoistedoutand flown directlyto [Vancouver GeneralHospital],” saidBarnett.
Earlyinthe morningon May 5, thehelicopter returnedandthe remaining SAR members were liftedoutofthe area.

TheDistrictofNorth Vancouveris floatingtheideaof requiringwater meters,withthegoalof reducingconsumptionduringprogressivelyhotter anddriersummers.
OnMonday,May5,councildirected staffto reportbacktocouncilonopportunitiestocutwaterusageandexplore other options,includingestimatedcostsfor implementingwatermeteringacrossthe municipality.Butduringdiscussion, most ofcouncilseemedlukewarmontheissue dueto upfrontcosts.
Inhis reporttocouncil,Coun.Jordan Backsaidmeasuring consumptionis a criticalpartofwatermanagement systems, andthattrackingusagetendsto reduceit.
“Asourcommunitygrowsandclimate changeintensifies, Ibelievewe mustact proactivelytoensure sustainableandfair wateruse,”Back said,addingthatthe districtchargesaflatfee of $901 regardless of howmuchahouseholduses.
“Thisisa systemthatdoesn’tencourageconservationandisinequitablewhen low-usage householdsare supportinghigh usageones,”hesaid.
Backpointedto othermunicipalities whohave putmass residentialmetering inplace,like West Vancouverin2007and Richmondin2018. Watermeteringin West Van reduceddemand bymorethan40per cent,hesaid.
Currently,theDistrict of North Vancouver requiresallmulti-family, industrial,commercial,institutionaland mixed-usebuildingstobemeteredatthe timeofnewconstruction,orwithbuilding permitswithavalueof $300,000ormore, Backnotedinhis report.Newparkservices,suchasirrigation, mustbemetered too.
“Iwantto note importantlythatmy motionisn’timposingimmediateimplementationbyanymeans. It’s simplyasking stafftoassessthefeasibility, upfrontcost, whichweknowhasbeenabarrier, Ithink, forthisconversation inthepast,tomove forwardandpotentialbenefits of introducingwatermetering,”hesaid.
Mayorskepticaloncostbenefit of water meters
Whilesupportiveofthemotionfor more informationfromstaff,MayorMike Littlesaidhehasanunpopularopinionon thisissue.
“It’snotasupplyproblemthatwehave. It’sadistributionproblem,”hesaid.“We

Accordingtostaffestimates,adding a watermeter when installingservice connectionona residentialhousecosts around$2,000, which jumpsto$3,600for retrofittingametertoanexistinghome.
In thiseconomicclimate,Coun. Jim Hansonsaidit’snotthetimetoadd anotherbigfeeto residents’taxbills But thedistrictcouldintroduceachargefor peoplewithswimmingpools.
“Thatcouldbeintroduced immediately,”hesaid.“There’snocosttocreating thatpolicy,andwouldcreatea little bit moreequity,becausethat’sobviously a discrepancyinusage–peoplewhohave largerswimmingpools.”
Afterthediscussiononmetering, Hansonintroducedaseparatemotion tohavestaff reportbackonoptionsto encouragetheuse of rainbarrels. Council passedthatitemas well.
“Summers…aregettinghotterand hotter. Winters aregetting wetterand wetterwith more intense rainevents,”he said.“Rainbarrelsofferthedistricta way tocollectsomeofthisdelugethatfallsin thewinterandstore it foruse in gardens in thehot,drydaysofsummer.”

OperatorsofaNorth Vancouver preschoolthathasbeentakingcareof totsformorethan70years saythey mayneedtocloseforgoodifthey don’t receivefinancialhelp from the community.
Non-profitUpperLonsdalePreschool offersaplay-basedprogramforthree-and four-year-oldchildrentoexplore andlearn throughvariousactivitieslikeart,musicand outdoorplay.
Ascostsriseandfunding fromthe governmentandcommunitybecomesthin, theyareaskingforhelpfromthepublic.The non-profitpreschoolsaysit needs$38,000 byMay31tocovernextyear’soperating costsuntilalong-termsolutionisfound,or itwillbeforcedtocloseaftertheacademic yearendsinJune.
“It’sbeenyearsofridinginadeficit,it’s notjustthatit’shappenedovernight. We’ve slowlybeenseeingadeclinein ournumbers,”saidleadteacherErin Tommasi.
Thepreschoollauncheda GoFundMe tohelpsavethe facilitybackinMarch and haveraisedjustover$2,700.NorthShore TD brancheshavealsopitchedintohelp save
thepreschool,makinga$5,000donation. Theschool’smainfundingisthrough parentfees, Tommasisaid.Asmallportion isfromgovernmentandcommunity grants, butthosearen’talwaysguaranteed.On
topofraisingfunds,theyarehopingto fill 28spotsforthefalltostayopen.Only15 childrenhavebeenenrolled,shesaid,and they’dneedanother13studentsto break even.
“Thiswouldcreateusa bridgefornext yeartokindofenvision howwecan move forward andcontinueto be sustainable,” shesaid.
Anumberoffactorsarelikelycontributingtothe preschool’s decreasingenrolment numbersinthelastfewyears, Tommasi said.
Earlyeducation haschangedinthelast fewyears,shesaid,includingthe$10-a-day childcaremodel,which doesnotinclude operationslikeUpperLonsdale Preschool.
Anotherfactorcouldalso be the preschool’s modeloftwo-and-a-half-hour classesinthemorningandintheafternoon, particularlyforfamilieswhoworkfull-time andarelookingforall-daycare.Astraditional preschoolsare disappearing,Upper Lonsdalewantstokeeptheirmodelrunning forfamilieswhowantorneedotheroptions, said Tommasi.
“Forfamiliesthatchoosesomething different,wewant tostayhereforthem,” shesaid.

“It’skindofatricky situation, becausewe’renotjustapreschool. There’ssomuchcommunityinvolvementwithinthesewalls,beingthatit’s beenherefor70-oddyears,”shesaid. “Ibroughtmychildherewhenshewas three,andthatwas20yearsago.So thislittle placeholdsalotofheart.”
MadeleineCampbell,parentand communicationsleadofthepreschool’sexecutivecommittee,shares Tommasi’ssentiment,asshe went thereas achildandherson now attendsthepreschool.
“Ijusthave reallywarmmemories fromthattime,”shesaid.“WhenIcame backtogototheopenhouse for[my son],Iwasjustshockedathowlittle hadchangedfromwhenIwas a kid.”
Campbellsaidshehopesthe school willstayafloatnotonlyforthekids, butbecauseitisa vitalpartofthe community.
“I thinkitwould reallychangethe neighbourhooda lot,” Campbellsaid, addingthattheyhavebeenableto buildacommunityofparentsbeing friendswithoneanotherandsiblings returningtheretohelpwithevents.
Both TommasiandCampbellhope theycansavethepreschooltoprotect thespacebeforetheendofMay.

ThewayI wrote it wouldalso be consideredprettylamebyatextsavvy youngster, somewhat akinto a university professor reading Wu-Tang Clanlyrics. It’sjustalittlebit off.Moderntexters,for instance,would never enda statementlike thatwithaperiod (oruse anypunctuation, really).Thatmakesyou look likeyou’re eitherkindoflame or kindofangry (a dad, basically).

Afterservingincabinetforthepast sevenyears, Wilkinson’snamewasnot amongthe28called TuesdaymorningasPrimeMinisterMarkCarney sworeinthetopofficialsinhisnew government.
Previously, Wilkinsonhadserved asministerofenergyandnatural resourcesunderJustin Trudeausince 2021,andcontinuedinthat roleas Carneytookthe reignsoftheLiberal Party.
ButonlyfourMPs retainedtheir seatsincabinet,andtheNorth VancouverMPwasn’toneofthem ThenewheadofNaturalResources CanadaisMarkham-ThornhillMP Tim Hodgson,formerCEOofGoldman SachsandformerchairofOntario utilitiesproviderHydroOne.

“Itwasfascinatingtowatch how patient theseguysare,becausethingsnever work….Theseguysarethemastertravellersinthatenvironment,” he said.“Thisis wheretheylive,andthisiswhatthey do, everyday.”

On Tuesday,Danks saidDNVFRSwas workingwithpoliceandinsurerstoget aninvestigationinto thecauseofthefire underway.
“It’sgoingto takeprobablyseveral weeksforthat to happen,ifnot longer,” he said.
Duetotheheavydamagefrom the fire,thesitehasbeenlockeddownand residentshavebeen told notto return to thearea,Dankssaid.

Withthedisplaced residentsunable to returntoSilverlynn intheforeseeable future,NSEMishelpingthem find permanenthomesinthelocalcommunity, or furtherafield.
“Myhopeis,asmuchaspossible, peopleare abletostayontheNorth Shore andintheircommunity,”Dickensaid.
“Andtheremayinfactbefolksthat wanttomoveto otherareasofMetro VancouverortheLowerMainland.And wherethoseopportunitiesare available, we’llworkwithBCHousing and other communityhousingserviceprovidersto trytomatchpeoplewiththebest fit,” she said.
Intheshortterm,NSEMishopingto bringasenseofstabilitytotheevacuees afterthe firetragicallydestroyedtheir homes.
“Wewillbebringingeverybodyback togetheronThursdayforatownhall meetingwhere we’lldoamentalhealth check-inwitheveryone,makesure people’sphysicalandmedical needs are beingmet,and reallychecktoseewhat thecurrentunmetneedsare.Andthen howweclosethosegapsforfolks,”Dicken said.

Itis with greatsadness that we announcethepassing ofour beautifulmother, grandmother, andgreat-grandmother, Kathleen (Kathy)Butter eld, on April29,2025. Shewas predeceased byherbeloved husband, Robert (Bob) Butter eld, in 2013. Kathywas born in Cornwall, Ontario, in 1936 to Vera Shaw andRobertSmillie.Theymoved to Vancouverin1942, andshe attended PointGreyJuniorand Magee SecondarySchools. Shetook up skiinginher teensat GrouseMountain, whereshemet theloveofher life, Bob. As ayoung mother,Kathy startedvolunteeringatLions Gate Hospital, servingfor more than 60 years. Many yearswere spentatthe family cabininDeep Cove,curlingatthe North Shore Winter Club,boatingtoRoyal VancouverYacht Club outstations(especially Cortes)anddecadesspent skiingat Whistler. Shealsoenjoyed travelling,painting, andgardening. Butabove all, sheloved beingwithher family.
Kathyissurvivedbyher four children: Wendy(Iain), Mike (Holly), Sharon,and Jim(Linda);seven grandchildren: Rob (Chelsa), Devon(Darragh),Alyson(Corey),Jennifer(Conor), Helen(Joseph),Erik,andLauren; andtwo great-grandsons: RonanandCallan. Herjoyfulspiritwill be with us forever.

MargaretLaviniaDickwasbornand raised in North Vancouver,British Columbia,whereshebelonged to oneof thearea’searly families. Hergrandfather worked in what wasthen Moodyville,beforeit becamepartofNorth Vancouver.Her father wasa tugboat captainwithCates Towing.She grew up ina close-knithomewithherparents, Kathleenand JamesGibson,and herbrother John. Shehad many wonderfulstories abouther childhood -skiingon GrouseMountainbeforetherewerelifts,swimming in Lynn Canyonon long summerdays, andbike riding through Lynn Valley. Some ofherhappiestmemories were spenton thefamilytugboat,the Gaviota,outon thewater with peopleshe loved. Margaret was predeceased by her belovedhusband, Hugh Dick Jr. Throughout herlife, shefound joyingardening, playingthepiano,sewing,and spending time with lovedones.Sheespeciallyenjoyed visits with her daughterand son-in-law in theHudson Valley, New York,and lovedtravelingwithHugh. Sheworkedfor many yearsasa dentalassistant,a jobshe truly enjoyed. Margaretalso had adeep love foranimals, and therewerealwaysdogsand cats in her life. She had aspecialaffection forher stepchildren- Doug McLellan, MarilynMazar,and JessieJohnson -and theirfamilies, as well as forherdaughter Kathleen and son-in-law RichardBell. Shewaspredeceased byher treasured stepdaughter BarbaraLaFave. Margaret wasproud ofher Scottish heritage.Visiting theInner Hebrides,whereher grandparentshad lived, wasa specialexperienceshe fondly remembered. Margaret wasdeeplycared forby SherrieCaronand Michelle Fontaine,whose compassion, kindness, and steadypresencemeant the worldtoher andbrought much-needed comfort in her final years. Shewasalso grateful forthe devotedstaff at HeartwoodLong Term Care Home in Cornwall, Ontario, whoseattentivenessandgentle care helpedensureher final chapterwasoneof dignity andpeace.
